Samenvatting

A commentary on the report of the Verdam Commission appointed by the Dutch Minister of Justice in 1960 to inquire into the revision of labor legislation, published by the Dutch Gov Printer in 1965; it is particularly concerned with recommendations about workers' participation. The Commission studied the methods of participation: (1) legislation requiring a clear presentation of annual balance sheets; (2) right of enquiry to be extended from shareholders to employees; (3) greater rights for control committee (raad van commissarissen); (4) improved position of the works council (ondernemingsraad); and (5) right of workers to select a member of the board of directors (directie) of Corp's. It is commented that the Commission did not, for all practical purposes, make use of the achievements of industrial sociology and that it has ignored the role of labor unions in establishing a well-functioning system of participation.
