Intersectionality and interference
How politics and policy retain, fight and
change inequality
The first part of this article addresses four
problematic patterns in current intersectionality
research: a bias on identities;
a lack of attention for privilege; confusion
between normative and descriptive
concepts and a lack of deep theory. Suggested
improvements are based on the
use of a meta-concept of interference and
on linking to theories by Charles Tilly and
Sylvia Walby. The second part categorises
four promising ways of addressing interferences
between inequalities in politics and
policy making. The categories are: reactive
exposing of bias; pragmatic application of
existing instruments; substantial restructuring
and a focus on democratic and
coalition procedures.
