Abstract

(p. 168)

The comparison of the Drenthe enclosures with the hillforts, the Viereckschanzen and the mortuary enclosures as occurring in adjacent regions present us with so much agreement in formal detail that we cannot see the enclosures as locally developed phenomena. They must have originated under strong influence from the Celtic south and they probably had related functions, adapted to local needs and circumstances.
