Heliodorus in New Contexts, St John’s College and Faculty of Classics, Cambridge, 12–13 December 2018

We are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the conference Heliodorus in New Contexts, to be held at St John’s College and the Faculty of Classics, Cambridge, 12th–13th December 2018:


This conference focuses on the Aethiopica of Heliodorus, the last and most ambitious extant novel from antiquity. Topics covered will include the Aethiopica within traditions of art criticism, Byzantine and early modern reception of Heliodorus, the novel’s relationship with earlier narrative genres, and its place within a late antique context.

Conference papers will be pre-circulated at the beginning of November. Confirmed speakers include Caroline Vout (Cambridge), Ingela Nilsson (Uppsala), Laurence Plazenet (Clermont-Auvergne), Jonas Grethlein (Heidelberg), and Georg Danek (Vienna). Respondents include Simon Goldhill, Richard Hunter, Tim Whitmarsh (Cambridge), Ewen Bowie (Oxford), and John Morgan (Swansea).
