Abstract

This article investigates the switch from Frisian to Dutch as a written medium among the members of the secular clergy in West Friesland in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the 15th century the preferred written language of wordly priests of Frisian origin turns out to have been Frisian, whereas Dutch seems to have been favoured by priests of non-Frisian stock. rom about 1520 the use of Frisian among priests of Frisian origin rapidly declined. During he period 1530-1550 Frisian as a written medium was still in use among certain, probably lderly, priests, but its use now depended on the situation or the wishes of the people they rote for. By 1550 the switch from Frisian to Dutch must have been virtually complete.
