Samenvatting

In the early 14th century, the translation of three chivalric romances into Old Swedish (customarily known as Eufemiavisor) marked the beginning of literary production in the vernacular in medieval Sweden. Flores och Blanzeflor is held to be the youngest of the three translations. It has been established on textual evidence that the text was in all likelihood translated from the Old Norwegian Flóres saga ok Blankiflúr. Except for a short fragment dating from the mid-14th century, the text is preserved in a number of 15th- century compilation manuscripts. The aim of this essay is twofold: to illustrate and briefly discuss the most relevant peculiarities of the translated text – using the Descriptive Translation Studies approach as a methodological frame – and to make some observations on how the text might have been used and interpreted in the 15th-century manuscripts as part of an intertextual dialogue involving a number of texts that showed thematic affinities.
