Samenvatting

It is peculiar to human beings that they think in terms of stories. Thus, the theatre’s communication with its public takes place through stories. The story gives form to charged human events. Relationships and processes can only be told in pictures. Even performances can be told to advantage in pictures. The goal of the director is to capture the space between, the differences which differentiate. If we now ask ourselves what it is that happens in a theatre, we can see that a play works in two ways. It establishes and explores relations between the characters—or even just between the actor and the space itself— and at the same time it establishes and explores a relationship with the spectator. The paradox of my profession is to show in front of the curtains what happens behind it.
