Samenvatting

A critique of Op 't Land. Op 't Land seems to be somewhat wary about a sociological analysis of culture, although culture is, along with structure and function, one of the 3 basic sociological concepts. At a certain stage of development of societies, a traditional pattern of living is faced by the shock of encountering a modernist pattern. Op 't Land seems to see a correspondence between the relations of the traditionalist pattern of the Frisian village of Dantumadeel, the modernist pattern spread by the nearby Wageningen Agricultural Coll, and the theory of 'cultural circles' of Fr. W. Schmidt; but this is a false analogy. While there exists a connection between the growth of the modern-dynamic cultural groups and certain soc groups, this connection is neither simple nor direct. At Wageningen, in any case, the concept of cultural pattern is loosened from the soc basis and is used to study individuals rather than groups. I. Langnas.
