Samenvatting

To investigate Pierre Bourdieu's (1989) thesis that cultural capital is converted into economic capital, 1991-1995 questionnaire data were obtained from two groups of high school students & three groups of sociology & public management university students (total N = 454) in Rotterdam, Netherlands, regarding their agreement with eight statements about the economic & cultural value of specific courses of study. Factor analysis demonstrated that those with the most cultural capital were less likely to view education as a way toward higher economic status. However, boys had a more instrumental orientation, tending to specialize in technical subjects more likely to bring financial rewards. In contrast, girls tended to opt for sociocultural types of education. Thus, Bourdieu's claim was found to ignore the motivations of the students. 5 Tables, 74 References.
