Samenvatting

The Dutch government masterplan for social studies teaching in continued education is examined. The plan addresses three questions: the standpoints from which social life can be approached, the social problems to be treated, & how these problems are to be treated pedagogically. The answers to the first two questions are critically examined. The plan seeks to avoid the pupils' indoctrination in a specific ideology & specifies four required viewpoints: structural functionalism, social-behaviorism, historicism, & symbolic interactionism. These are ill-defined & the attempt at sorting all theoretical options into four categories is pedagogically & theoretically ill-conceived. General comments on the relationship between social studies & sociology are offered. A course of social studies must remain faithful to the pioneer work of great thinkers, eg, R. Aron & N. Luhmann. Social studies should be taught at the University level as well as sociology. A. Orianne.
