Samenvatting

Nuisance Value and Entrepreneurship. A Historical Sociology of Social Problems. The public's awareness of social problems and its impact on their sociological study is discussed. Societal processes of differentiation and integration have established a context within which social problems have begun to impact not only individuals directly affected, but also people who are only tangentially associated. Increased awareness of social problems has, in turn, accentuated feelings of moral responsibility toward the downtrodden and resulted in the emergence of moral entrepreneurs -- priests, caretakers, etc -- who promote the problems of society, often portraying them in more symbolic than realistic ways. Sociologists studying social problems must attempt to juggle objectivism and alarmism on one hand and subjectivism and quietism on the other. An attitude of skeptical realism is perhaps the best approach. 85 References. Adapted from the source document.
