Samenvatting
This article investigates firstly how and why housework and child care are divided in a particular way between the adult partners within Dutch households, and secondly how and why these partners perceive this particular sexual division of household chores as either fair or unfair. An exchange theoretical perspective suggests that in general power, dependency and ideology influence both the division of housework and child care between the sexes, and the perceptions with respect to the fairness of the division of these tasks. It is empirically found that those theoretical suggestions make sense.
