Samenvatting

In order to achieve a comparative study of suicide in diff societies, an approach which combines soc & psychol'al points of view is necessary. The following factors have to be considered where diff's in the nature & the f of suicide in diff societies are found: (1) The acculturation pattern in a society will breed more or less aggression in the individual & will influence the direction of this aggression. (2) As an individual belongs to a certain soc category within a society, he will have to play certain soc roles, which carry greater or lesser risks & frustration. In this way an individual is soc'ly predestined to suicide to a certain extent. (3) Belonging to a certain soc category exposes the individual to a smaller or larger measure of soc control, & the influence of this control will depend on the extent to which suicide has been instit'ized as a behavior pattern. A continuum was found with individual suicide on one side & instit'al suicide on the other, & a place on this continuum was considered for a number of non-Western peoples, including the Maria in south India, the Bugosa & the Joluo in Africa, North Amer Plains Indians, Eskimos, & Japanese.
